Package Air Conditioning Systems

What does Kathy Mesa Think of Isley's?
Prompt, courteous, and professional. I have worked at this hotel since 1986, and Isley's Home Services has done the majority of the work we have had done. They did the air conditioners, some of the plumbing, and water heaters, and they always stand behind their products. They are also very prompt, courteous, and professional.
A Package unit is an Air Conditioning and Heating combination supplied from one piece of equipment. This type of system is normally installed on the roof or concrete slab on the ground outside of your Phoenix, AZ Home.

Benefits of installing a new package unit on your Phoenix, AZ Home

  • Economizer: Generally package systems are less expensive than split systems, due to easier access for service and installation
  • Saves Space: This is a great option when space is not available inside the home or business
  • Reduces Noise: Having the system installed outside reduces the sound of operation

Make certain your package system is properly sized for your Phoenix, AZ home, or commercial business

In order to maintain its efficiency the HVAC system must be as close to the proper size as possible. If a unit is too big it will not only add to the cost more to buy, it will cost more to function as well. Oversized systems will cool the home too quickly without dehumidifying the space properly.  On the other hand, if the unit is too small, your Air Conditioner will run continuously and never reach the desired temperature causing more electricity to be used.

Square footage must coincide with the factors listed below, this will give us an exact calculation of the tonnage required to properly heat and cool your Phoenix home. A load calculation is the recommended process to properly calculate the required size of a HVAC system for a Phoenix house.

  • What indoor temperature do you desire?
  • How many people occupy the home?
  • What is the R-value of your attic insulation?
  • Are there single or double pane windows on the home?
  • Do you have insulated window treatments to minimize heat gain?
  • Are there vaulted ceilings to consider?
  • Does your home face north/south or east/west?

Most common types of package systems

  • Duel fuel systems are a hybrid system that allows for both comfort & energy savings by utilizing the electric heat pump for warmth, except in colder periods, which is when the gas furnace would take over to ensure maximum comfort and energy savings
  • Packaged heat pumps offer Air Conditioning and Heating with heat pump technology. The compressor is used in both modes to transport heat in or out. A reversing valve reverses the flow of refrigerant to adjust to the heating and cooling modes.
  • Packaged gas-electric units offer all-in-one Air Conditioning and natural gas-powered furnace. The gas unit operates independently when calling for Heating.
  • Packaged air conditioners cool your home and can heat it as well, using electrical strip heat. However, this is the least efficient way to heat your home

Understanding Energy Efficient Ratings meanings and definitions

Due to the demand for energy efficiency all Package Air Conditioning and Heating units are created with a minimum rating of 13 SEER. The most common ratings to search for are SEER, EER, HSPF and for gas units, AFUE. These ratings measure the total amount of energy consumed while your unit is operating. Use these ratings as a guideline when comparing different brands of equipment.

AFUE

Or Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency measures the furnace Heating efficiency. This number represents the amount of fuel use, which is converted to heat within your Phoenix home. A 90% AFUE means 90% of the fuel is converted to heat your home and 10% goes out the flue pipe and is lost.

HSPF

Or Heating Seasonal Performance Factor is the most universally used to calculate heat pump heating performance. The higher the HSPF the more efficient the heat pump.

SEER

Or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, which is normally used to evaluate the efficiency of an Air Conditioning system throughout the year at various temperatures.

EER

Or energy Efficiency Ratio is the measurement of a cooling system with the outside temperature is specifically at 95°. The higher the EER, the more efficient the unit will function.
